107th Radio Broadcast & Loudspeaker - Korea
Voice of the United Nations Command

Remembrances by Bob Richards

I remember that the Ft. Bragg RB&L unit sent people to Japan, Okinawa and Korea. We were in barracks on Smoke Bomb Hill with the 77th Special Forces on one side and an airbourne arty. unit on the other.

Since we were not airborne, we had to walk quitely and not bring attention to us. I was assigned to the 107th and do not have orders now. When I arrived in Seoul, january, 1960, no one knew where I was supposed to go. Since my orders stated 107th RB&L Bat., VUNC Radio, they sent me to AFKN, then they found the right compound.

We worked under the UN Command and manned the Voice of the United Nations Command Radio Transmitters and recording studios.

We had a Transmitter and Antenna in our compound with recording and broadcasting studio. We also had a transmitter and antenna around the Camp Casey, Camp Kaiser area close to DMZ, I never went there.

I was the Company Clerk and mail Clerk and didn't get away from the compound much. But During the 1960 student uprising, I did guard the front gate, (with empty carbine, but a full canteen of water)they said to holler if needed ammo and someone would bring......but the US flew President Synman Rhee out of Korea to Hawaii to the dismay of the Korean people that wanted his hide....I heard later that he took much of the Treasurery with him.

Some names from my time: C R Kober, Clarence Blaine, First Sgt. Grizznick, lst Lt. Steele, lst Lt. Venzek, Supply Sgt. Mike Mickechonis, Charlie McFarland, Doster, Charles Knowland, Boesch, Cathcart, Forrest, Kennedy, more that I can see their faces but the names won't come to me.

Company Commander was Col. E.M. Robertson, then Lt. Col. Jody Stewart ( a super good officer).

We had Korean KPs , Waitresses in mess hall and korean workers all over motor pool and houseboys and house girls. All this cost us $4.00 per month per man.

I was 21 then and 64 now.

Sincerely, Bob Richards
