Compelling stories and spellbinding visuals characterize the diverse commercial films of Marie Hyon, a founder and director of Psyop. She and her directing partner Marco Spier have helmed many memorable ads. There’s LG “Something’s Lurking,” which is reminiscent of a scene from an animated blockbuster and earned them a Gold CLIO for Directing, and MTV HD “Crow,” a PromaxBDA winner that unfolds like a lithograph hauntingly coming to life. Most recently, Marie & Marco have directed spots for Tiffany’s, Stand Up to Cancer, Michelin and Rent the Runway.
Among the first to break through in commercials as a director/designer, Marie melds design, animation and live action to create atmospheric, colorful and emotional content that transports audiences into the heart and soul of the scene. That humanity can be seen in the award-winning Otto “The Letter” (2016), an animated short via Heimat, Berlin, and “Wall and Chain” (2014), branded content for Airbnb and Belonganywhere.com via VCCP Berlin. Another highlight, Marie & Marco’s adidas “Hu Jia” spot for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, which was part of TBWA/China’s first-ever Cannes Gold Lion-winning campaign. Other industry honors include a PromaxBDA Lifetime Achievement Award, and awards from D&AD, AICP, CLIO, Webbys, ADC and Golden Award of Montreux.
Marie counts building Psyop and fostering its community of artists and storytellers are among her proudest accomplishments.
